The Next Life
On March 11, I will be releasing my debut single as a solo artist. I am excited, curious and a bit - scared to death. Moving to Nashville was a tough decision, but everyday I wake up, I know I am in the right place, both professionally and personally.
My new single is called “The Next Life” and it is about a person is getting their “mojo” back after various degrees of setbacks, complacency and lack of direction. Like all my songs, there are some autobiographical elements, but I think all of us at times find ourselves getting caught up in the “same old, same old” routine with each year looking a great deal similar to the previous.
Sometimes you need a fire lit under your ass to make those risky choices that will allow real growth.
For me, that fire was leaving the comfort of my hometown to become a small fish in an ocean of talented artists. Getting better at your craft isn’t just a goal, it’s a requirement for survival in a city like Nashville.
I think Dylan said it best, “he who isn’t busy being born, is busy dying.” I hope I can write a line that good someday. But for now, I’ll be busy trying.
“The Next Life” will be a glimpse of what’s to come from me. Though I love my traditional country, my goal as a solo artist is to play my part in pushing music forward. I want to add a different twist that has not yet been done. The music of Sam Hunt may not be your cup of tea, but at the very least, he is putting his own stamp on what is possible in country and popular music. I happen to think my stamp is going to be a few shades better than Mr. Hunt’s.
Cheers to “The Next Life”!
